An oasis of waterfalls, cottonwood trees, and naturalized animal habitats, the Rio Grande Zoo is one of the best-managed and most attractive facilities of its kind in the nation. More than 200 species of wildlife from around the world live here. In keeping with its mission of wildlife care and conservation, the zoo has established captive breeding programs for more than a dozen endangered species. Concerts are performed on the grounds during the summer. There's a cafe on the premises.
American International Rattlesnake Museum:- 202 San Felipe St. NW Albuquerque, NM
Included in this strange collection of living "rattlers" are rare and unusual specimens, such as an albino western diamondback. The museum's labels, its engaging staff, and a video will supply you with the lowdown on these venomous creatures -- for instance, that they can't hear their own rattles and that the human death rate from rattlesnake bites is less than 1%.
Rio Granade Nature Center:- 2901 Candelaria Rd. NW Albuquerque, NM
This year-round refuge in a portion of the Bosque, the nation's largest cottonwood forest, is home to all manner of birds and migratory waterfowl. Constructed half aboveground and half below the edge of a pond, the park's Observation Room has viewing windows that provide a look at what's going on at both levels. You'll see birds, frogs, ducks, and turtles. The park has active programs for adults and children and trails for biking, walking, and jogging.
